DESCRIPTION:Ethical Finance 2019 (EF2019) is organised by the Global Ethical Finance Initiative (GEFI) which oversees\, organises and coordinates a series of activities to promote finance for positive change. GEFI annually hosts in Edinburgh the premier platform that convenes the world’s foremost business\, political\, civic and social leaders of society to network\, share\, co-develop and shape a fairer\, more sustainable financial system.\n\nWith the Bank of England recognising climate change as a core financial risk\, the proliferation of the UN SDGs and the ongoing dichotomy for asset managers wrestling with the social impact versus economic return conundrum; the financial system is undergoing material transformational challenge.\n\nTogether with UNDP and Scottish Government\, Ethical Finance 2019 will convene over 400 leading finance practitioners from across the globe to help define and shape the transition to a sustainable financial system where finance delivers positive change.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSummary Agenda\n\nDay 1 : Purpose\, culture and sustainability\nThe first day of the conference will focus on embedding sustainability into the business models of financial institutions. SUMMARY:Edinburgh Ethical Finance Round Table - Blended Finance for the SDGs
DESCRIPTION:To coincide with Ethical Finance 2018 the next award winning Edinburgh Ethical Finance Round Table meeting\, delivered in partnership with Baillie Gifford\, will take place at The Scottish Parliament. \nHosted by Ben Macpherson\, Minister for Europe\, Migration and International Development\, the round table will discuss the role blended finance can play in delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). \nFinance Gap\n \nAchieving the SDGs requires US$5-7 trillion p/a investment. \nWith an estimated US$ 2.4 trillion p/a shortfall\, the private sector is poised to fill the gap. But only a fraction of the worldwide invested assets of banks\, multinational enterprises\, pension funds\, insurers\, as well as philanthropists and foundations is SDG-relevant. \nOpportunity\nThe SDGs could create 380 million jobs and generate US$12 trillion in business savings and revenue across four sectors by 2030. The total economic prize from implementing the SDGs could be 2-3 times bigger (assuming benefits are captured across the whole economy and accompanied by much higher labour and resource productivity). \n“The world has never before been united by a set of global goals on poverty\, inequality\, injustice and climate change. Not achieving these Goals would be the biggest market failure of our time. Financial markets must play a vital role in creating a sustainable future for us all.” Mark Wilson\, Chief Executive Officer\, Aviva Plc \nRound Table Discussion\nBen Macpherson MSP will kick-off the meeting with a summary of how Scottish Government has integrated the SDGs into the National Performance Framework and the consideration given to the SDGs in relation to its international development approach. \nGail Hurley and Jamie Ervin from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will then highlight how public and private investment can strategically mobilise additional private finance in “blended finance approaches” for SDG-aligned instruments. \nFurther insights will be provided from leading local and international finance practitioners before the floor opens for discussion. \nTHIS EVENT IS BY INVITATION ONLY. DESCRIPTION:Following the success of the October 2016 event on Shari’a Governance\, the Islamic Finance Council UK (UKIFC) and the International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) in association with K&L Gates are delighted to provide details of the 2018 Thematic Workshop which will focus on the topic of the relationship between Islamic finance and ethical finance. \nThe trend of positioning Islamic finance within the broader umbrella of ethical finance has gained momentum in recent years. Following Shari’a principles\, it is argued Islamic finance is seen to be intrinsically interwoven with ethical finance values and strategies. \nHowever\, this view is not shared across the whole of the financial services industry. DESCRIPTION:The latest in the award winning series of the Edinburgh Ethical Finance Round Table meetings\, organised by the Islamic Finance Council UK (UKIFC) in conjunction with our new hosts Baillie Gifford\, is entitled: UN SDG’s and the role the financial services sector can play in making them a reality. \nOur last Round Table focused on faith-based finance\, with views and insights shared by Catherine Alexander (chair of the trustees of the Church of Scotland Investors Trust) and Saquib Ismail (Senior Sales Manager) at Al Rayan Bank\, the UK’s largest Islamic bank\, with Martin Johnstone\, Secretary of the Church & Society Council\, Church of Scotland and Omar Shaikh\, Advisory Board Member\, UKIFC concluding the formal presentations by discussing the first global partnership between Islamic finance and the church and the challenges and opportunities of using a shared values approach. \nThe theme of our next event will be on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and will include the following: \nFran Van Dijk\, Partner\, One Stone Advisors will introduce the SDG’s and highlight how some of the leading players in the banking\, insurance and investment are helping to make the SDGs become a reality. \nLee Qian\, Investment Manager\, Baillie Gifford will then provide a more detailed case study looking at Baillie Gifford’s Positive Change Fund\, an impact fund which aims to generate attractive long-term returns by investing in companies whose core business activities are addressing an social or environmental challenge. DESCRIPTION:The Global Ethical Finance Forum is an initiative of Middle East Global Advisors and the UKIFC\, two leading institutions spearheading the agenda of sustainable and inclusive economy and of building connections with the broader ethical finance industry. DESCRIPTION:The Islamic Finance Council UK (IFC) and the International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) are delighted to announce details of their forthcoming Thematic Workshop taking place in London on Wednesday 26th October 2016. The event\, entitled Is the Current Model of Shari’ah Governance Fit for Purpose?\, will include the launch of the seminal External Shariah Audit Report. \nLeading international scholars will partake in a live audience debate exploring current Shari’ah governance model including a review of the role of scholars\, impairment\, gaps and weaknesses in current structures. Perspectives from world leading scholars\, including Sheikh Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ali Elgari (Saudi Arabia)\, Prof. Dr. Mohamad Akram Laldin (Malaysia) and Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar (Nigeria) and Sheikh Haytham Tamim (UK)\, will be shared. \nThe seminal External Shariah Audit Report will be launched at the event. The report\, underpinned by the insights shared by 30 exclusive in-depth interviews with regulators\, auditors and financial institutions in Bahrain\, Oman\, Malaysia and Pakistan\, reviews the development of international regulations and early implementation challenges for external shariah audit. \nA regulators session\, chaired by Stella Cox\, with representatives from the Bank of England and State Bank of Pakistan\, will explore challenges in regulating Shari’ah scholars. \nThe final session will be on individual ethics and reflecting on the public dismay towards bankers’ bonuses\, rate fixing and miss-selling scandals in conventional banking markets will ask: are Islamic banks immune to such? and is it all about the fatwa? to what extent should Islamic bankers be individually and personally responsible?
